Kamakura créer Kōbō is a pottery and art studio in the green hills of Fueda, Kamakura, run by Kumiko Iiyama — a certified clinical art therapist and potter. She was born into a family of scroll mounters and grew up surrounded by the artwork made for Kamakura’s shrines and temples; she has been throwing pots since she was twenty. The studio’s belief is plain: skill is not the point. Children work with clay, paint and their own hands in a calm, light-filled room looking out onto the trees, with an adult beside them who is genuinely delighted by whatever comes out — because being different from other people, as the studio puts it, is a treasure. Classes run from toddlers with a parent through middle school. Visiting families are welcome to join a single session.
