About

Forty-five minutes with a pencil rather than a brush — the other half of what this classroom teaches, and the easier way in for a younger child or anyone who would rather write something they can actually use afterwards. On ruled practice paper she works on how the pencil is held and how a character is balanced in its square, through hiragana and a first few kanji. No ink, so nothing to spill, and the shortest of the three sessions.

Requirements

  • Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday only — the calendar shows the times the classroom actually opens.
  • A parent or guardian stays for the session. Watching is free; an adult who wants to write as well books a place.
  • Taught in Japanese. Nothing on the classroom’s side is offered in English, so bring a translation app if you need one.
  • Everything is provided — paper, ink, pens and pencils. Come in clothes that ink will not spoil.
