Your Name in Brush — A Piece to Take Home

Ninety minutes to make one finished piece rather than a practice sheet. A visiting child’s own name is written for them in Japanese first — in kanji chosen for how it sounds and what it means, or in kana — and then they learn to write it themselves, stroke by stroke, until the piece is one they want to keep. Any short word or character can be written instead of a name. The extra half hour over the first-calligraphy session is the difference between having tried it and going home holding something.

• checkA parent or guardian stays for the session. Watching is free; an adult who wants to write as well books a place.
• checkTaught in Japanese. Nothing on the classroom’s side is offered in English, so bring a translation app if you need one.
